Powering the Future – E3 Lithium Is Leading the Charge in Sustainable Lithium: Interview with CEO Chris Doornbos
As the world accelerates its transition to clean energy, lithium has become one of the most critical resources of our time. Powering everything from electric vehicles to grid-scale batteries, global demand for lithium is rising rapidly. But with that growth comes the need for smarter, cleaner, and more scalable solutions. E3 Lithium, a Canadian innovator based in Alberta, is delivering exactly that.
Transforming Lithium Production Through Innovation
Since launching in 2016, E3 Lithium has been pioneering Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology tailored to Alberta’s lithium-rich brine resources. What distinguishes the company is its proprietary closed-loop system, which enables lithium extraction at commercial volumes—without drawing on freshwater resources or producing liquid waste.
At the core of this system is a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) approach, allowing all process water to be reused within the operation. This innovation is especially important in Alberta, where operations often take place in farmers’ fields and environmentally conscious communities. As CEO Chris Doornbos explains, the company’s greatest breakthrough isn’t just the ability to extract lithium—it’s doing so sustainably and with minimal environmental impact.
The Demonstration Facility: A Commercial Breakthrough
E3 Lithium’s Demonstration Facility marks a major milestone in advancing toward full-scale commercialization. Designed to operate at one-to-one commercial scale, the facility will showcase the full DLE process—from pre-treatment of the brine to lithium carbonation and production of battery-grade lithium carbonate.
What makes this unique is the ability to produce lithium suitable for direct sale to battery manufacturers, bypassing the need for secondary processing typically done overseas. This closed-loop, high-efficiency process is rare in the lithium space and reinforces E3’s leadership in clean-tech innovation.
Positioned for Scalable Growth
E3 Lithium is targeting over 32,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide production per year by 2027, backed by 1.29 million tonnes LHM in proven and probable reserves and a $3.72 billion NPV (8%), as detailed in its Clearwater Pre-Feasibility Study.
Operating in Alberta brings added advantages, including access to skilled talent from the province’s energy sector, a transparent regulatory environment, and infrastructure excellence inherited from decades of petroleum operations.
A Blueprint for the Future of Clean Energy
E3 Lithium is more than a resource company—it’s a trailblazer in sustainable technology. With its commercial-scale demonstration underway and a clear path to battery-grade production, the company is helping shape the future of lithium supply in North America and beyond.
